The Best Toners for Oily, Acne-prone Skin

Hey Lovelies,

One of the biggest debates in the skincare world is whether or not a toner is essential to a proper skincare routine. Many people swear by toner, and claim in makes a huge difference in their skin, whereas others believe it to be an unnecessary step that isn’t worth the extra money. I personally believe that toners are amazing. After cleansing our skin, it is essential to restore the PH of our skin, and using toner is a great way to do this. I also believe that toners can have beautiful soothing or purifying properties, depending on what you’re going for. Additionally, toning our skin can help to moisturize our skin, and better prepare it to absorb our moisturizer. If we apply our moisturizing cream or oil to a slightly damp face, our skin will reap the benefits of more moisture. When our skin is wet, our pores are more open, which allows our moisturizers to penetrate more effectively.

Today I want to address the best ingredients you can use to tone your skin when you struggle with oilier, acne-prone skin. There are many beautiful ingredients out there that can work wonders for this skin type, helping to control oil, and reduce breakouts.

1. Witch Hazel – This is a great ingredient to look for in a toner because it is so purifying yet gentle. Witch hazel is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory so it will help to heal breakouts and reduce redness. In addition, it’s amazing for regulating oil production.

2. Peppermint – This too is amazing for oily skin types! In addition to being wonderfully refreshing, it is also anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, much like witch hazel, although I would definitely say that peppermint packs a more powerful punch. I would definitely avoid a toner containing peppermint if your skin is sensitive in the slightest. However, for the rest of you gals that aren’t sensitive and are in need of a great blemish-reducing ingredient, definitely look into a toner that contains peppermint.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar – This stuff is seriously amazing. It’s also very cost-effective. Apple cider vinegar is great at regulating the PH of your skin and reducing acne. It can also help fade the hyperpigmentation caused by acne, which everyone knows can be a real pain. If you plan to give apple cider vinegar a try, I urge you to dilute it with water so that it doesn’t irritate you, because it’s pretty powerful stuff.

4. Lavender – Lavender is probably one of my favourite scents. In addition to its wonderful aroma, its amazing at balancing your skin, because it help to regulate oil production while quenching your skin; this makes it especially ideal for more combination skin-types. If you suffer from acne AND have sensitive skin, I feel like lavender may be more effective than the above three would.

So there you have it! I absolutely love toners and hydrosols because of their wonderful skin benefits as well as their relaxing properties. Imagine having one of these great hydrosols in the summer for an afternoon pick-me-up? Or using one with lavender before bed?

I would love to hear about your favourite toners! What do you find effective in keeping acne-prone skin controlled?
